Calcutta weather has a tropical savanna climate, which means that the weather is generally wet and dry.  The annual average temperature is 27 C, with the lowest recorded temperature being 5 C and the highest being 49 C.  The best time to visit the city is considered to be between October and March, when there is no extreme heat or humidity.  The most distinct characteristic of Calcutta weather is the monsoon which occurs in August and brings abundant rainfall to the city.  Moderate north-westerly to north-easterly winds blow throughout the city for most of the year.  Early mornings are usually misty and evenings can often be foggy.

Calcutta weather in the summer is generally hot and humid, with temperatures ranging from 24 C to 38 C.   When Calcutta weather is dry, the temperature often exceeds 40 C, especially during May and June.  Thunderstorms and heavy rains, known as Kal baisakhi , come from the northwest during early summer and offer relief from extreme humidity and heat.

Winters are very short in Calcutta, as they usually last for just 2.5 months.  The temperatures during this season range from 12 C to 27 C. 

The annual rainfall in Calcutta is around 160 cm and most of it occurs between June and September.  Rain during this period comes from the Bay of Bengal.  August is the wettest month of the year, with 306 mm of precipitation.  Calcutta weather receives 2,528 hours of sunshine throughout the year and the maximum sunlight occurs during March. Air pollution is fairly severe in the city, and the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) level is relatively high, leading to frequent fog and haze.
